Varied Menu of Activities

What is a “Varied Menu of Activities” ?

“Varied Menu of Activities” refers to extra curricular activities i.e. clubs, classes, groups and activities run by schools, sports clubs, uniformed groups and private providers that take place outside of school hours. The “varied menu” bit is emphasising the value of a wide range of different types of activity – sports, arts, special interests and study support.

Why is the Varied Menu of Activities important?

Having opportunities out of school hours to play sport, engage in arts and drama, volunteer and make creative use of ICT all help children to achieve their full potential. Schools all offer their own “varied menu”, and these may include lunchtime as well as after school clubs. Beyond school, there are many different organisations offering a wide range of activities, either after school, weekends or during the school holidays.  This website can provide a starting point to find out what is available locally.

Out of school hours activities – How to safeguard your child

We would like to offer parents some guidance on what to look for when enrolling children and young people for activities which are run independently from school.All providers should have:

  • A child protection policy and procedures
  • Enhanced CRB (criminal record) checks for all staff and volunteers
  • Relevant insurance
  • Procedures for first aid, fire and emergencies
  • Risk assessment for the activity offered

This should be a minimum standard, in addition it may also be advisable to ask other parents what they think of the activity and/or to stay with your child for the first session.

Any reputable provider will be happy to explain their procedures and policies to you if asked.

Please do not assume that activities taking place on any school site have the schools endorsement in terms of child protection.  Many schools hire rooms to organisations that do not come within their jurisdiction.  If you are not sure whether an out of school hours activity taking place at your school is run by the school, please check with the school office.
